Having founded Om Records in 1995, Chris Smith knows a thing or two about electronic music. On his first full EP under his Shiny Objects moniker he presents a collection of seven groove-heavy numbers destined for discerning DJ sets worldwide. On the storming opener, ‘The Velvet Slide,’ there’s no denying the goose bump inducing opening synth line and the beat that kicks things into a psychedelic tunnel ride under the lights. Not to be undone, the steady building ‘Flutter Vision’ keeps the tempo up as a rolling groove pumps over a chopped up trippy distorted vocal. Next up is the eight-minute magnum opus ‘Time & Space’ reminiscent of classic tripped-out rave anthems, brought up to speed into what could be the stand out track of the EP. If the first three songs explored outer space, then the final three tracks on the EP cover the sensual side of the Shiny repertoire. Fans of the new generation of Om artists will be familiar with ‘You’re My Fool’ from the excellent ‘Architects & Waves’ compilation. ‘Nervous’ and ‘Tell Me What You Want’ are perfect for getting down after dark.
